FIRST in Embedded Systems

Fraunhofer FIRST / Institute

No matter what it is – it’s embedded

Embedded systems run and control a multitude of devices – from washing machines to medical equipment and commuter trains. Contrary to desktop computers, embedded systems are integrated in a technical system. They consist of a control unit and a control loop with actuators and sensors, and are connected with their environment.

According to ARTEMIS, an European technology initiative, some 16 billion embedded systems were deployed worldwide in 2010. This number is expected to more than double to roughly 40 billion devices by 2020. Below we will introduce some of those invisible helpers in greater detail:

In Practice
Pathfinders, Lifesavers, Pacemakers: embedded systems often take on key safety-critical functions in machinery. Researchers at Fraunhofer FIRST improve the safety, efficiency, and easy operation of these small
computers.
