SnipSnap – collaborative knowledge management based on wiki and weblog technologies

The web-based collaboration tool SnipSnap is a Fraunhofer FIRST development that allows simple, distributed knowledge acquisition for collaborative knowledge management based on wiki and weblog technologies. Wikis are collections of pages available in the web which users can not only read but also edit online. In the weblogs, authors document the web pages they have visited by writing hypertext entries. Different authors’ weblogs are closely networked.

Technology

A key aim of the SnipSnap project is to achieve user-friendliness and maximum flexibility through easily understandable, efficient input methods. Once registered, a user is automatically logged on and by a simple mouse click can edit existing or create new content. Using SnipSnap, ideas and experience can be easily documented and communicated to others. Internal and external references make it easy to link different contexts. Virtual labels enable content to be categorized, marked and evaluated.

SnipSnap is first and foremost personal knowledge management. All registered users are given their own homepage and access to an umlimited number of topic pages, enabling them to manage their competences and experience, store ideas and maintain annotated bookmarks. But SnipSnap is also team-oriented knowledge management. All users have access to the topic pages of other users: they can annotate them, extend and supplement them if desired, and use references to link their knowledge with that of other users. To search for edited content, complete text search and semantic search functions are available.

SnipSnap is based on standard technologies: the complete application is implemented in Java and can be run on any Java application server. A scalable data storage system allows data to be stored as files in the file system as well as in high-performance databases.
The system’s user interface and functionality can be adapted to any environment during runtime. The Radeox wiki rendering engine developed by Fraunhofer FIRST and deployed in the SnipSnap project converts simple text-formatting instructions and complex macros into arbitrary formats like XHTML or print-ready documents. Radeox’s flexible architecture allows the embedment of a wider variety of input formats such as Textile or C2Wiki.

Application Areas

SnipSnap can be deployed in a large number of sectors, especially in areas requiring domain-specific collection and maintenance of knowledge. SnipSnap also provides an ideal platform for spatially and temporally distributed teams because messages and content are available at all times in linked and documented form. SnipSnap is used especially in software development, where it serves as a communication platform for the entire development process – from development and testing to documentation.
