 | SmartWeb – Semantic Web |

The SmartWeb project focuses on mobile applications and intelligent information technologies for the World Wide Web. FIRST’s contribution is to build a system providing mobile broadband access to the Web and to develop additional services that can be broadcast.
The Semantic Web movement aims to use standardized data formats and descriptions to automatically analyze digital information and understand its content. A search algorithm can then process inquiries by finding in the Web a humanly intelligible natural-language answer. For instance, to a question about the height of Mount Fuji, it will supply the answer “3,776 metres” instead of listing all the pages containing the word Fuji. The Semantic Web is designed to provide easy, intuitive access to information, even via mobile receivers like cell phones or PDAs. Fraunhofer FIRST’s role in the overall undertaking is to develop additional services that broadcast information (e.g. weather reports, traffic information, sports news) to specific target groups and can be used individually by receivers.
SmartWeb will thus not only make it easier to find information but also allow a wide variety of services to be used individually, irrespective of location. The project, which is being conducted by 14 different institutions from the research and business communities, is headed by the [German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI))|http://www.dfki.de] and funded by the [Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF)|http://www.bmbf.de].
