FIRST at CeBIT 2008

Virtual altitude training in the home environment, a mobile pump system for heart patients, and a shield against unknown hacker attacks in the Internet – these three very different projects showcased by Fraunhofer FIRST at CeBIT demonstrate the sheer diversity of modern information and communication technology. Interactive presentations, intriguing exhibits and revealing insights into the technology make FIRST research a triply rewarding experience.

Fraunhofer FIRST sends CeBIT visitors off on an “almost real” bicycle tour. In cooperation with pro4senses GmbH the department for Interactive Systems (ISY) presents an holistic training environment combining interactive projections on any form of surface with movement, olfactory applications (smells & aromas) and controlled oxygen levels in the air supply. This enables you to meet your own set training goals with much greater efficiency no matter how grandiose or modest they are – anything from biking up Mount Kilimanjaro or training for the next city marathon to just making sure that your afternoon walk doesn’t leave you gasping for breath! (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Stand: Hall 9, Stand B36)

Unusual insights into the human being and software are offered at the stand of the department of Embedded Systems (EST). A glass model of the human torso demonstrates the positioning and functionality of an artificial cardiac support system which can assist or even replace the vital organ in many patients suffering from serious heart conditions. Fraunhofer FIRST uses state of the art techniques based on software models to ensure constant quality assurance for the system from Berlin Heart GmbH, helping patients to lead as normal a life as possible. (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Stand: Hall 9, Stand B36)

Attacks by hackers and virus writers are a true nightmare for home computer users. At the exhibition of the department for Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) CeBIT visitors can test their own skills as hackers by mounting an attack on a test system – and seeing for themselves how the Intrusion Detection System developed by Fraunhofer FIRST is a failsafe means of detecting and coping with such unwanted intrusions. Even unknown viruses are not immune to the new innovative system which detects and defeats them autonomously. (Stand of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research – BMBF, Hall 9, Stand B40).

We would be delighted to greet you at CeBIT. We would also like to invite you to two special lectures:

- “Fitness@home – the first virtual training camp in your own four walls “, (talk in German) Ivo Haulsen, Thursday, 6 March 2008, 10.20-10.40, Fraunhofer-Forum in Hall 9, Stand B36

- “Protection against unknown hacker attacks: automated recognition of novel security violations using machine learning methods“, (talk in German) Pavel Laskov (Ph.D.), Thursday, 6 March 2008, 15.50 hrs, future talk in Hall 9.
