Together with the federal state of Berlin, Cisco has announced the Internet of Everything Innovation Center openBerlin. The aim is to speed up and introduce innovations as well as developments around the Internet of Things. Fraunhofer FOKUS will participate in the research and development laboratory of the Innovation Center. At the Cisco IoE Innovation Center, customers, startups, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology experts have the opportunity to jointly develop new ideas and technologies and present applications involving the Internet of Things.
The Internet of Things needs a reliable,high-capacity communication network that can support the requirements of various applications in an optimal and efficient manner. For many years the researchers at the Competence Center Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) of Fraunhofer FOKUS have been successfully working on future communication networks and extensible, flexible control platforms for human-to-human and machine-to-machine applications. Their contribution to the laboratory will be their know-how and their internationally tested OpenXXX-Tool for broadband networks and broadband services in Cloud-Environments like OpenMTC, conform with the ETSI-standard middleware-platform for M2M-applications and services.
Apart from Rio de Janerio (Brasil), Toronto (Canada), Songdo (South Korea), Barcelona (Spain) and London (England), Berlin is one of six new locations in which Cisco has opened an IoE Innovation Center. The official opening of the IoE Innovation Center in the Berlin district of Schöneberg is planned for 2015. The decision for Berlin was made on the basis of the strong potential for innovation as well as the unique mix of experts, infrastructure and the strong business and research community. The business location and the reference character of the Smart City Berlin is to be made more attractive with the innovation incubator.
