W3C’s »Second Screen Presentation Community Group« publishes its Final Report

News from July 21, 2014

The W3C’s Second Screen Presentation Community Group published on July 21st, 2014 the final report of the Presentation API Specification. The Specification defines an API to enable web content to access external displays and use them for presenting web content including HTML pages, videos, images, etc. The community Group was created at end of 2013 by Intel and published its first report on 12th November, 2013.

Fraunhofer FOKUS' Competence Center »Future Applications and Media – FAME« researches and develops solutions for multiscreen applications and supported the W3C Community Group since its creation. Our scientists worked actively together with other partners in the Community Group on defining use cases and developing the specification of the Presentation API. Furthermore, we implemented the specification in FAMIUM - a prototype implementation for early technology evaluation and interoperability testing. FAMIUM facilitates multiscreen presentation, adaptive media streaming, content protection, cross-platform development and content synchronization. FAMIUM will be also shown at IFA, the world's largest trade fair for Consumer Electronics on September 05-10, 2014, Berlin, Germany – hall 11.1, booth 22.

We offer a proof-of-concept implementation of the Presentation API for different protocols including DIAL, WiDi/Miracast, Airplay, etc. as well as for different platforms including Android, iOS and Desktop - for your requirements, such as evaluation or interoperability testing. If you want to get insights into different multiscreen technologies ask for our training and tutorial sessions about multiscreen application concepts, challenges and development. Here you will find a description, online demonstrations and videos of different FAMIUM implementations of the Presentation API.

The activity and work on the Presentation API will be continued in a W3C Working Group, which its creation is currently work in progress.
